St. Helen’s Daily Lenten Devotional

“Create in me a clean heart, O Lord,
and renew a right spirit within me.
Cast me not away from your presence
and take not your Holy Spirit from me.”

Psalm 51

Laying naked, before the Lord
The selfie of my soul is revealed.
My transgressions,
All that is broken and dark and ugly within me
Are in the spotlight.
Not a pretty sight.

There is beauty also…
Beauty and strength and wisdom
But I often keep that hidden as well.
It has not always been affirmed.

I want God to ‘wash me through and through’ I really do!
But do I have to be absolutely transparent?
So honest?
Can’t we add a filter to the photo? Soften the edges?
Do my negative attitudes, bad behavior, intolerant thoughts
Have to be in such vivid colours?

God promises to wash me through and through…
Until, like freshly fallen snow, or well cleaned fleece, I am, once again, pristine…

“Come now, let us reason together, says the Lord:
though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow;
though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool.”

Isaiah 1:18
