‘Mindfulness’ does not simply mean an awareness of God’s Presence. It also refers to a sensitivity to what is going on around you, in the present moment, to other people and to the world.
A prayer-filled life is Spirit-filled and more often than not, is attuned to our Lord’s activity in every day occurrences. There are times when, securing a quiet, holy space, we rest in, and experience, the Silence… gently leading us in adoration, thanksgiving, confession and praise. But those opportunities are not always readily available.
Life happens! The busy merry-go-round keeps on its endless track.
And yet St. Paul encourages us to pray constantly and to “Pray in the Spirit at all times in every prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert and always persevere in supplication for all the saints.” Ephesians 6:18.
Prayers of intercession are one way to acknowledge and respond to life’s moments. Not all are offered on bended knee. Washing dishes at the sink, working out on the treadmill, commuting, that coffee break pause, waiting for the computer to respond, or for a telephone call, waiting in general…all these offer precious time we can use to pray for others.
Being attentive to what is going on around us also calls for ‘arrow prayers’…as we pass construction workers out in the cold, as we encounter a medical practitioner(or indeed anyone!) who is obviously stressed, as we witness a dear soul walking with painful steps, as we observe a young adult struggling with something within yet fearful to share, as we hear the sirens and see the flashing lights of first responders, on their way to any number of hazardous, life threatening, critical calls. Pray for them all. And concerning that last group, the police, firefighters, paramedics, crisis workers…if you don’t practice this already, may you be challenged, every time you hear a siren, (not just during Lent) to pray for God’s protection and blessing upon those professionals who serve the common good.
Prayer: Almighty God, bless all first responders, the men and women who work with such dedication, for our safety and well-being. We offer our heart-felt thanks for their service and their sacrifices. Keep them safe and give them strength, discernment, wisdom and courage as they give of themselves for the sake of those in need. I pray in the name of my Saviour, Jesus. Amen.
