St. Helen’s Quiet Garden Devotional

Early Winter 2018

The snow dusts the pilgrimage path yet footprints have carved their way around the ichthus (Jesus Fish). The need for quiet moments, and for remembering, intensify, even as the hours of daylight shorten and the cold winds blow.

Advent days, with their message of hope, love, joy and peace, offer us spiritual strength and inspiration, as we prepare for the birth of our Saviour: Jesus, the Light of the World.  Even the bright Christmas lights sparkling on nearby trees and homes on Prestone and Kennedy, speak of the Holy One’s Light! Although we may well be distracted with the busi-ness of the Christmas festivities, however lovely, or trying, they may be, the yearning to stay centred, and to keep the reason for it all in focus, remains.

The scriptures of the season call us to rejoice in Emmanuel ‘God with us’ and recall Jesus’ words …I am with you always and My peace I leave with you…As you walk the path, pause for prayer, or simply gaze at the expanse, let that Presence and Peace enfold you. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God…The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it…and the Word became flesh and dwelt among us…” The Gospel according to John, Chapter 1
